Agricultural production
According to the United Nations and FAOStat, global agriculture’s value added was estimated at USD 3.5 trillion in 2019, up 73% on 2000. Its share of global GDP was estimated at around 4%, and the sector employed a little under 900 million people globally, down from over one billion in 2000. Over the same period its use of pesticides and fertilisers was up by +36% and +57% respectively, pointing at further productivity increases but underlying real concerns about soil health and long term yield increases. The sector features subsectors such as cereals & oilseeds, fruits & vegetables, roots & tubers, insect farms, aquaculture, and animal production among others. Animal production, which includes cattle farming, dairy farming, pig farming, chicken farming, turkey farming and sheep farming is a very large segment. Another is fish farming which has increased its global share of fish protein at the expense of traditional fishing. Since biofuel mandates have been introduced in various countries, sugarcane, beetroot, grains, oilseed, palm oil have been used in ever larger quantities to supply biofuel plants producing bioethanol and biodiesel used in road transportation, not to mention co-products such as glycerol or DDGS. In the EU-27, agriculture’s economic contribution (measured as gross output) was estimated at €414 billion in 2020, of which crop output made up €219 billion and animal output €159 billion. As regards the US, its agriculture, food, and related industries contributed $1.055 trillion to the U.S. GDP in 2020, a 5.0-percent share. The output of America's farms contributed $134.7 billion of this sum—about 0.6 percent of GDP. In 2020, 19.7 million full-and part-time jobs were related to the agricultural and food sectors—10.3 percent of total U.S. employment.
